E3 - Energy and Efficiency with Emily is building science, architecture, and female entrepreneurship. Welcome to Season 2: Life is short, time is valuable, and many of you tune in to the podcast frequently. So this week i’m keeping the podcast short and giving you longer homework! Go out, pick up “Healthy Buildings” by Joseph Allen and John Macomber. This is a subject i’ve been interested in for awhile, but I think the last 7 months have made it come to the forefront of a lot more discussions. So it’s timely that this book came out to help us dive deeper into the impacts our buildings have on our health. We hope to talk about this book on BS + Beer in early December before the Holiday Break - but join in with us now and read along! ~ Happy Reading ~ Emily

When I read that I knew I needed to talk with her. She is incredibly entertaining, a force to be reckoned with in the passive house community, so well connected to what other countries are doing better than us, and a huge proponent of raising the bar in our industry. We were having such a great chat that I just started recording and didn’t even bother with an intro. ~ Enjoy! ~ Emily

Season 2: Episode 32: Women In Construction - Kiyona & Saleha

Season 2: Episode 32: Women In Construction - Kiyona & Saleha

E3 - Energy and Efficiency with Emily is building science, architecture, and female entrepreneurship. Welcome to Season 2: I’m really proud to highlight the awesome stories of other women in the field of construction and related trades. It’s fun to share their stories, to be impowered by the women who are already doing it and to inspire more women to join in. The construction industry has a major labor shortage, and we have a large population with a lot of debt who have never considered a trade. There are a million reasons why you might be happier in a trade related field - everything from pride of craftsmanship to potentially high earning wages that make it a lucrative and possibly debt free industry. So today i had the pleasure of talking with Kiyona and Saleha, two young and exciting women in construction here in Maine. It’s interesting to hear their backgrounds, their stories, and their encouragement for the construction industry to get in front of more women, minorities, or any other young person to talk about how exciting it can be to work in our field. I hope you enjoy, I know I did! ~ Emily

Season 2: Episode 30: Building Science Short NZE vs NZC

Season 2: Episode 30: Building Science Short NZE vs NZC

E3 - Energy and Efficiency with Emily is building science, architecture, and female entrepreneurship. Welcome to Season 2: I promised you some building science basics short podcasts and it’s been 10 weeks since I did one. So to ease back in from vacation, I thought I would throw together a quick one on the shifting mindset in the building science community. For 20+ years we have really been working towards Net Zero Energy (NZE - or ZNE, or ZE) and the reduction of the operational energy of our buildings. And while that is critically important, science now tells us that for the next 30 years it’s even more critical to pay attention to the embodied energy of our buildings (extraction, manufacturing, transportation, and material make up of the products we use and their energy penalty from day 1 of a building) So moving towards Net Zero Carbon (NZC) or carbon storing buildings will be critical in the next 30 years or we won’t have the opportunity to reverse the increasing temperature of our planet. So enjoy this short, join the BS+Beer Show’s book club - and pick up The New Carbon Architecture to learn more! ~ Emily

E3 - Energy and Efficiency with Emily is building science, architecture, and female entrepreneurship. We only touch on it briefly during the podcast, but we chatted afterwards about our time there and the fond memories. Season 2: Episode 21: Breaking Down Building Science: PGH

Season 2: Episode 21: Breaking Down Building Science: PGH

E3 - Energy and Efficiency with Emily is building science, architecture, and female entrepreneurship. Welcome to Season 2: I’m trying something new this week. With all the amazing content out there right now and in respect of your time, i thought i would start throwing 15 minute segments in periodically on building science topics. Since PGH is a hot topic right now, i wanted to start there. I could spend hours talking about PGH - but maybe what we need is some building science shorts. So to kick it off this week I started with PGH because maybe the first question is Why? Why should we be building better more durable, more efficient, and healthier homes. And if you’re new to building science, there is no better place to start than The Pretty (damn) Good House.

This week’s podcast is about policy and education and just thinking building science is cool so other people will think it cool too. I could talk to the two of them all day. This is a little bit of a glimpse of what it would be like if you were sitting at a dinner table with us while we discuss our favorite subject: Climate Change.
